The “adventure” of the Photography Center of Thessaloniki begun in 1995 even though it originated from the Photography Group of the Municipality of Triandria, founded in 1984 by Vasilis Karkatselis. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki offers advice and helps the Greek Photography, and is seated in a rented building in the town center. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki aims at supporting the creative and artistic photography. In order to achieve this goal, the Center tries to promote the work of Greek and foreign photographers, artists, clubs and other actors working on art, organizing innovative and unusual exhibitions in its showrooms or in other actors’ showrooms, barnstorming one town after another with group or personal exhibitions, editing and publishing photography albums and exhibition catalogues, granting scholarships and many other things. An archive, a library, a web site and a photography case have been formed in order to preserve, study and search ways for saving our national character and access into the international scene. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki organizes annually training programs and informs photography clubs, groups, institutions, public actors, and other legal entities. It also participates in the organization and co-organization in Greece and abroad of speeches, screenings, meetings and exhibitions offering full moral, technical, and financial support, and promotes the development and expansion of photography and any other mean of image (i.e. magnetic and electronic image, multimedia etc.). In order to achieve the aforementioned non-profit goals, the Photography Center of Thessaloniki forms researching and publishing teams and cooperates with any domestic or foreign actor with the same goals and interests for the promotion and expansion of the art of photography. Great emphasis is laid on the workshops that were formed and operate within the Photography Center of Thessaloniki. The “schools” are directed by specialized trainers while professors and artists also participate. Students enliven the Photography Center of Thessaloniki, which appears as a “living organism”. Two of the basic activities of the Center are the establishment of the institution of pupils’ photography with the participation of public and private schools of Thessaloniki and getting to know other photography groups in Greece. The establishment of Photography Center of Thessaloniki resulted from the wish of one group of photographers willing to move towards the liberation of the expression through dialogue. The constant occupation with artistic and creative photographs in Thessaloniki by many actors, schools and groups, increased the number of artists and eventually their works. This work claims aguishly a decent representation and a proper environment for free communication with the public. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki was formed to cover the lack of a special showroom where the modern artistic work could formulate and put forward speculations and issues, could doubt the past and claim the future. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki is constantly trying to de-margin the artistic photography and to keep always in the highest levels, the faith for anything new. Situated in the town center in a three-floored building in order to host one large exhibition or three smaller ones, with proper lighting systems and all the necessary infrastructure, the Photography Center of Thessaloniki operates the last 6 years in support of all constant photography activities. The need of the modern scene of photography in Thessaloniki to formulate a special “word” (autonomous and at the same time universal) directs to balance the domestic work with other important exhibitions from Greek and European cities. While the Photography Center of Thessaloniki lays emphasis on the modern artistic works, it also leaves a “light on” for exhibition of historic interest and professional photography. The Photography Center of Thessaloniki believes in high goals under the equal and honest participation and cooperation with all actors. Thus, it is always open for any photographer, club, group, cultural center, Museum etc.
